Parent Duties
Little Athletics is a volunteer-run sport. Running an athletics meet is a big operation, and we rely on families to keep it running smoothly. At Plympton Flyers Little Athletics, we are privileged to have a passionate and dedicated group of volunteers who coordinate our Sunday morning competitions. But we need your help!
To ensure fair participation and support of our weekly competitions, each family is required to contribute through parent duties. A $50 refundable Parent Duty Bond is included in the membership fee for the first child and will be returned at the end of the season if all duties are completed. The Parent Duty Bond encourages all families to share the load, ensuring no one is overburdened and every task enhances our athletes’ experience.
Each family is required to complete four parent duties during the season (two before Christmas and two after), such as helping with the canteen, BBQ, or equipment setup/pack-up.
Our system enables parents to self-select their roles and times via our online rostering program, SignUp.

Notes on Using SignUp
- Please use the same email address as for registration.
- Please use your child’s full name, so we can easily reconcile your duties.
- Please fill from the earliest dates first.
- If you cannot complete a selected duty, switch it via SignUp.
- For support with signing up, watch this quick video or email volunteer@plymptonflyers.com.
Duties are offered on a “first in, first served” basis, and you are required to stay for the duration of the shift. On the day of your duty, please check in upon arrival. If you are unable to attend, let us know as soon as possible. Parent support is a core part of our program, and without rostered volunteers, events may be delayed or cancelled.
Parent Duty Roles
Set Up or Pack Up
Assist with setting up before meets or packing up equipment after meets.
Track Assistants
This role involves assisting in the operation of our tracks during meets. Every Sunday, we have two tracks running simultaneously: a straight track for 50m, 70m, 100m, and hurdles, and a circular track for 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m races. Each track requires the following volunteers:
- Starter – Start races using our electronic start devices.
- Marshall – Hand out discs at the finish line and marshal athletes to the recording table.
- Recorder – Record race details in the computer at the finish line.
Each of these track assistant roles is very easy to learn.
Canteen & BBQ
Assist with cooking the BBQ or serving in the canteen.
Season Start Helpers
For the first four weeks, assist with uniform and registration pack distribution and help Come and Try attendees sign in.
Note: Helping Age Managers does not count as an official parent duty. These duties apply only to Plympton Home meets; additional duties are required for State Events if your child participates.
We understand that some families may face extenuating circumstances preventing duty fulfillment. Exemptions can be requested by contacting our treasurer at treasurer@plymptonflyers.com. For full details, refer to our Parent Duty Policy.
Parent Participation
Plympton Flyers Little Athletics is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. Our committee, comprising parents whose children participate in competitions, coordinates regular meet competitions.
We understand many parents may be new to Little Athletics. Our committee members and experienced parents are available to assist. Little Athletics SA’s How to Help At Little Athletics (SA) guide outlines all events and how you can assist.
Your child is involved in a sport offering immediate and long-term benefits, including:
- Higher levels of fitness
- Better health
- A fun social environment
- Satisfaction from skilled performances
Little Athletics can provide a launching pad for lifelong involvement in sport, whether elite or recreational. Most importantly, it offers children the opportunity to have fun! Your understanding approach can be your child’s most valuable asset in enjoying sport.
