One of the best days of the season
The State Relay Championships gives our athletes the chance to join forces with their clubmates and take on a variety of track and field relays. It's all about team spirit and community — and parents are invited to join the fun too. The Championships are held in mid-December each season.
All parents assisting in the running of, and selection of, relay teams are volunteering their time and experience to deliver a great experience for everyone — please support them as they support our athletes.

Seven different relays across track, field and family — there's a race for everyone.
All relays are conducted under the rules set out by Little Athletics SA (LASA) — see the SALAA Competition Regulations (LR7) for full details.
Eligibility, teams & selection
Our aim is to give every eligible athlete the opportunity to represent the club in a team-based track and field competition — and to enjoy themselves while doing it.
Eligibility
All registered Plympton Flyers athletes from U8 to U17 are eligible to compete.
Team composition
An athlete may compete in a maximum of three events, comprising:
- Two track events and one field event; or
- One track event and two field events.
A field relay team may have a maximum of four athletes (one per event) and a minimum of two (two events per athlete).
Each age group may enter up to three track teams and one field team. Typically, the four fastest athletes form the A team, the next four make up the B team, and the following four form the C team — provided there are enough competitors.
Relay selection
Selecting relay teams is a challenging task. Parents will first be advised by email that their athlete has been selected to represent Plympton Flyers, and asked to confirm availability. By accepting selection, parents agree to make their athlete available for relay day and the minimum required scheduled training sessions.
Final team selections are then made by the relay selection committee, with input from Age Group Chaperones and Coaches. The decision of the selection committee is final.
- The athlete must be a fully paid member of Plympton Flyers
- The athlete's history of performance at previous State Relay competitions
- The athlete's season personal best and season average across the relevant track events: 70m, 100m, 200m, 400m
- The athlete's season personal best and season average across the relevant field events: High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus
- The athlete's relay skills, including baton passing and receiving
- Athletes who compete weekly and attend training
- The athlete's attendance at relay training sessions, including general relay training and running-order training
- The athlete's attitude and training performance
Roles & responsibilities
A few clear responsibilities help relay day run smoothly for athletes, parents and team managers alike.
Each relay team must have a Team Manager. They are the primary contact for the team(s) they manage in the lead-up to relay day, and liaise with the Relay Day Coordinator should any changes occur.
On competition day, the Team Manager escorts their team(s) to the marshalling area 30 minutes prior to the race start.
By accepting selection, parents agree to make their athlete available for relay day and the minimum required scheduled training sessions. Athletes who would like to compete but cannot attend training can still be involved, but may not be prioritised for an A team.
Late withdrawals can affect the entire team and may mean other athletes miss out on the opportunity to compete.
Athletes must adhere to the club's uniform policy on the day of the State Championship — not wearing the full correct uniform disqualifies the whole team.
