What is Little Athletics?
Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian modified athletics program for children aged 3 to 17, based on track and field. It offers a wide range of events, including running, jumping, throwing, and walking, modified to suit children’s age, developmental stage, and ability.
Little Athletics promotes “Be your Best” ®, emphasizing fun, participation, performance, technique, and family involvement in physical, healthy activity. The motto is “Family, Fun and Fitness.”
Across Australia, over 100,000 girls and boys enjoy Little Athletics. It is the “Foundation for all Sports,” as all sports use skills developed at Little Athletics.
Who Can Join?
Little Athletics is for boys and girls aged 3-17 years old, of all abilities. A modified Tiny Tots program is offered for children aged 3-5, who must have turned three before participating. Track and field programs are for children five and up, competing in age groups determined by their age on December 31st.
What Age Group Will My Child Be In?
Athletes participate in age-determined groups based on their age on December 31st, ranging from Tiny Tots (3-5 years) to Under 6 through Under 17, for both boys and girls. Use the Little Athletics SA Age Group Calculator to confirm your child’s age group. Athletes cannot move up or down an age group, and proof of age may be requested.
What Level of Ability Do Children Need to Join?
Our emphasis is on Family, Fun & Fitness. Children can join at any skill or fitness level. They receive encouragement to achieve personal bests (PBs). Little Athletics caters to children of all shapes, sizes, and abilities, making it one of the few sports that successfully includes everyone.

When Are the Meets Held?
Plympton Flyers LAC home meets are held on Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m., lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the age group and program. The season runs from October through March. Refer to our Season Calendar for the schedule.
What Happens on Sunday Meets?
Families should arrive by 8:30 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. start. All parents are required to help at club meets. Events include a warm-up followed by runs (50m to 1500m), hurdles, high/long/triple jumps, shot put, discus, and javelin, varying by age group (U6 to U17). Tiny Tots (ages 3-5) participate in fun, skill-based games.
Our home meets follow an Event Program, offering opportunities to qualify for the Little Athletics SA State Challenge and State Individual Championships. Drinks and BBQ items are sold at the canteen and BBQ, with funds supporting club operations.
During the winter season (April to September), cross country takes place on Sundays at various Little Athletics Club grounds, with distances from 400m to 3km based on age.
What Is Expected of Parents?
A parent or guardian must attend each meet. Little Athletics is volunteer-run, and Plympton Flyers LAC relies on parents for tasks like officiating, managing age groups, recording results, and working in the canteen/BBQ. Additional help is needed on the Committee. Little Athletics SA’s How to Help At Little Athletics handbook provides event information. See our Parent Participation page for details.
What Are Parent Duties?
Little Athletics is a volunteer-run sport, and Plympton Flyers relies on families to ensure our Sunday morning meets run smoothly. Each family is required to complete four parent duties per season (two before Christmas, two after), such as helping with the canteen, BBQ, equipment setup/pack-up, or track roles like starting, marshalling, or recording.
A $50 refundable Parent Duty Bond is included in the membership fee for the first child, refunded at season’s end if all duties are completed. This encourages fair participation, ensuring no family is overburdened while enhancing our athletes’ experience.
Parents can self-select roles and times via our online rostering program, SignUp. Click here to sign up for your duties.
See our Parent Participation page for full details.
Does My Child Need to Wear a Uniform?
Yes, all athletes (U6 to U17) must wear the full uniform, including Registration Badge, Age Badge, and Coles Badge, for all meets at Plympton Flyers and Little Athletics SA events. Badges are included in your registration bag, available approximately one week after online registration.
